Rumor (again): Davis to LSU

As I reported in a previous post, Baylor University had decided that money would not be the lure that hooked Scott Drew away from the Bears. That source said that UAB’s Mike Davis was the leader for the LSU job.

Today, that rumor comes again, and this time from closer to home – Mike Davis’ home. Rumors are heavy in the state of Alabama that Mike Davis is going to be LSU’s next basketball coach. The latest news on the issue surrounds star Mobile recruit DeMarcus Cousins, who is committed to following Davis wherever he goes, according to this Mobile Press-Register article. The article makes it sound like Cousins will follow Davis to whatever school he goes to, but if he stays at UAB, Cousins will have “a whole other decision to make.”

In addition to LSU, Cousins also mentions rumors that Davis could be going to South Carolina, where Dave Odom is retiring, or Alabama, where Mark Gottfried is on the hot seat.

A source tells me that the rumor in the Birmingham Tipoff Club is that Davis and John Brady are essentially going to switch jobs. Brady will return to Birmingham, where he had good success as the coach at Samford, and Davis will be hired at LSU.

For LSU, this could be a great hire, especially if Davis brings Cousins, a 6′10″ forward with skills, with him. A line-up that included Chris Johnson (6′11″), SEC Freshman-of-the-year candidate Anthony Randolph (6′10″) and Cousins across the frontline would be formidable indeed.

At this point, these are all rumors, but this is the strongest and most persistent rumor out there.

Special Note to Alabama fans: The reaction of Tide fans to Cousins’ desire to follow Davis and not attend the hallowed ground in Tuscaloosa has been anger, especially since the chances are greater that he will go to little brother UAB. This is the second time in a year that Bama fans have gotten their crimson knickers in a wad over UAB – remember last year when they persuaded the Alabama Board of Trustees to not ratify the contract that UAB offered to Jimbo Fisher? So Tiders, what are you afraid of from little ol’ UAB? For a University with your history, you sure are insecure.

  1. The LSU Tigers are the team of the decade. With a coach like Davis we could be back to the days when Shaq was playing.
