Just a few notes, because I already got most of my LSU thoughts out in the rare Saturday Hangover. But I do have at least one more:
In my previous post, I placed the blame for LSU’s loss to Arkansas on Bo Pelini and the LSU defense. I did a little more looking, and the Tiger offense’s lowest point production this season has been against Florida and South Carolina – LSU scored 28 points in both games. LSU has averaged 40 points per game on the year. Now, if they indeed did have a dominating defense, they would be 12-0 and not 10-2.
It is weird, however, to be complaining about a 10-2 team. During the nineties, some Tiger fans would have killed their own mothers to have LSU go 10-2.
Injuries could be a factor in the SEC title game, with worries about Glen Dorsey, Trindon Holliday, Darry Beckwith, and Matt Flynn.
It is interesting to me how some say that LSU has the greatest talent in the country as a way to bash Les Miles. LSU lost 4 players to the first round of the NFL draft last year – does anyone remember that? In that perspective, a shot at the SEC title the year after having all those big players leave is pretty impressive.
Onto some other notes from around college football:
Mizzou won the Border War over Kansas, 36-28. Chase Daniel put an end to Kansas’ Big 12 and National Title hopes (sucks, doesn’t it Jayhawk fans?). Daniel threw for 361 yards and 3 tds with no picks to lead Mizzou. Now Mizzou must take on Oklahoma, a team that has already beat them once, for the Big 12 title and a shot at the BCS Championship.
Alabama lost their sixth (6th) Iron Bowl in a row. If Auburn fans really want Tuberville gone, they are indeed the craziest fans in the world.
Alabama fans who are placing their faith in the Nicktator should maybe take a look at his career record against Tuberville: 2-4, including this year. Just paying a guy $4 million a year doesn’t guarantee that he is actually a better coach. Heck, Tuberville could be at LSU next year anyway.
Also from Friday, I notice that Texas A&M killed Texas for the second straight year. When A&M hired Franchione, I told my Aggie grad friends not to worry, that in a few years they would be regularly beating up on Mac Brown and the ‘horns. I was right about that, but I didn’t foresee the overall mediocrity and scandal-ridden nature of the program. At least I was right about one thing, I guess…
UConn – what a fraud.
USC will be going to the Rose Bowl on the strength (or lack of) of Dennis Dixon’s ACL.
A friend suggested to me that they rename the Heisman the “Tebow.” I am down with it. Especially after an FSU player said that they were going to take him down, and Timmay went out and accounted for 5 tds. Message to Bobby Bowden (and Joe Paterno): Get out before you do any more damage.
All around coaches are being deposed by angry mobs and/or AD’s: Callahan is out at Nebraska, Orgeron at Ole Miss, Franchione at Texas A&M, Carr at Michigan. I might have missed some, but those are the big ones.
