Oregon lost last night at Arizona, 34-24, continuing the ‘Curse of #2′ and removing them from national title contention. The greatest benefit of this win is for Oklahoma and Kansas, who are the number 3 in the AP Poll and BCS, respectively. More troubling for Oregon, though, was that star quarterback and Heisman candidate Dennis Dixon went down untouched, spraining hsi knee. His return for next week’s game against UCLA is uncertain. Predicting this college football season has officially been declared illegal.
Today, I continue with what I started yesterday, rating the coaches that on my initial LSU coaching prospects list. Same caveat as yesterday apply. If you have heard of any other candidates or have any other ideas, put them in the comments and I will try to grade them and post it this weekend. Anyway, here are the others:
5) Bo Pelini
Pros
Definite head coaching material
Young, enthusiastic and ambitious
Has coached some excellent defenses and defensive players
Cons
No head coaching experience
Defensive lapses this year are troubling
Overall Grade: 7.5
6) Jeff Tedford
Pros
Acknowledged as a good qb tutor
Turned around the doormant Cal program
49-21 overall record as a head coach, all at Cal
Cons
His Cal teams still haven’t ascended to the top level
Is he an SEC style coach
Is being mentioned for other jobs, like Michigan
Overall Grade: 7.0
7) Derek Dooley
Pros
Young, new blood coach
Is getting things done in Ruston
Good coaching pedigree, both family and experience
Cons
No real record yet to speak of
Is very young and very inexperienced as a head coach
Tech team is improved but has yet to pull off a signature win
Overall Grade: 5.0
Butch Davis
Pros:
Has big time college football head coaching experience at Miami
Compiled a 50-20 at Miami despite probation stemming from his predecessor, Dennis Erickson
Recruited great talent while he was at Miami, such as Ray Lewis, Andre Johnson, and Ed ReedIs
4-0 in bowl games as a head coach
Cons
Might be tempted by Arkansas job because it’s his alma mater
4 more horses out of the gate, Duck Hunting
