Reliving A Miracle and Mourning a Dying Program

This week, the Tigers travel to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Just writing that brings back some incredible memories, because 5 years ago, in that very stadium, LSU pulled off the most improbable victory in my memory. LSU had been unable to stop the ‘Cats for pretty much the whole game, including on Kentucky’s final drive, when they kicked a field goal to take the lead 30-27. Let these two videos sum up what happened next:

And don’t miss ESPN’s summation of it:

I remember exactly where I was when I found out what had happened. Please also note that LSU’s play-by-play man incorrectly identifies Devery Henderson as Jack Hunt. Nevermind that Jack Hunt plays defense, or is a white guy, or that he doesn’t even wear a number close to Devery Henderson. For Hawthorne, the fact that his listeners can’t actually see the game is immaterial. Don’t worry, I have a longer post on this coming…

Anyway, thank God for Youtube. I hope this year’s game is not nearly so close.

In other state school news:

ESPN’s Bottom 10 has been published for this week and guess who debuts at number 8? The Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs. That’s right, my alma mater is one of the worst teams in the country, and my opinions on what should be done can be found here and here. So let’s take a closer look at things in Ruston:

  • The Bulldogs have won only 1 game this year, against Central Arkansas, an FBS (I-AA) program
  • After the second game, in which Tech lost to Hawaii by one (45-44), the Tech offense has disintegrated, with point outputs of 12, 6, and 0.
  • ULM, ULL, McNeese, and even Nicholls all have wins over FCS (I-A) teams this year.
  • Tech played the worse team in the SEC, and got shut out. Now, the Tech apologist might point out that Tech dominated on the stat sheet, racking up more yards, time-of-possession, and first down than the Rebs. But that means nothing.

I know that hopes in Ruston were high before the season, what with the relegation of Jim Oakes to the sideline, the hiring of Derek Dooley, and the upgrade in facilities. But there has been very little improvement shown on the field as yet. Truly, the light at the end of the tunnel is probably just an oncoming train.
