Rank Monday

That’s right, its time to digest the previous weekend and expel its waste in the form of a series of (mostly) meaningless ratings based on nothing more than my whim and fancy.

Rank News:

LSU has leapfrogged USC in the latest AP Poll. LSU garnered one more #1 vote than USC – 33-32 – to finish ahead in the poll by a margin of 2 points. That is the closest the top 2 teams in the poll have been since 2002, and the first time LSU has topped the poll since November 2, 1959.

Ok, on to the rankings for Monday, October 1, 2007

Football Pickers:

  1. Me: We both went 7-3 this weekend, missing on Auburn, Cal, and Bama. I maintain my two game lead on the Law, and so keep my #1 spot.
  2. The Law: See note above.

Teams: This is maybe the first weekend ever that I am glad I am not a voter in any polls. How could you rank the teams after the carnage of this week? Even more opaque is how to judge the conferences. We have seen the SEC go from having two of the top 4 teams in the nation to the Pac-10 having 2 of the top 3. The Big Ten has 2 teams in the top 5, and South Florida is the highest ranked team from that state, at #6. The SEC does have 5 of the top 12 teams in the poll. So, here is my attempt to make some sense of this madness.

  1. USC – I am not dropping them, despite what happened against U-Dub, because I know that LSU did not look very good against Tulane.
  2. LSU – 2 sub-par weeks, now. The break is over, it’s time to get back to being dominant.
  3. Cal – great win over Oregon in Eugene.
  4. Ohio State – they pounded U-Dub earlier this year, but does anyone trust Big Ten teams?
  5. USF – they just keep winning and I think they deserve a top 10 over Wisky.

And now we have a much more interesting Heisman Race, too:

  1. Hart, UM: continues to be the workhorse for this team. Can he overcome the 2 early losses in minds of voters?
  2. Tebow, UF: Stock down with loss to Auburn.
  3. Colt Brennan, UH: I can’t give the Heisman to a guy who threw 5 picks against Idaho.
  4. Dixon, Oregon: Stock down with loss to Cal.
  5. McFadden: probably still the best runner in the nation, but having Felix Jones average almost 19 yards a carry, and get only 6 less yards on 12 less carries doesn’t help.

Just outside the top 5, and gaining: Graham Harrell and Andre Woodson. This Heisman field is weak right now.

Final Ranking for now – Big 12 Divisions:

  1. North
  2. South

How long as it been since we have been able to say that!
