Roll Bama Roll has an excellent breakdown of Arkansas’ team last year (and the RBR Arkansas preview here) in their post titled “Hogwash,” and a testy response from one of the bloggers at The Hog Source. Near the bottom of the RBR piece “Hogwash” he quotes Eric Hoffer, who wrote this:
“The uncompromising attitude is more indicative of an inner uncertainty than of deep conviction. The implacable stand is directed more against the doubt within than the assailant without.”
RBR applies this to the Hog fan, and it is most appropriate. Having attended a few Arkansas games in the nineties and early 2000s, I can say that Hog fans are unquestionably the most insecure and fans I have ever been around.
I don’t remember what year it was, but I was at a Bama-Hog game somewhere around the year 2000 or 2001, and on the first play from scrimmage, Shaud Williams went 80 yards up the middle for a touchdown. On the ensuing Hog drive, the fans in our section were all over Houston Nutt’s playcalling. They were down only 7! There was still 13:50 left in the FIRST QUARTER! These fans had already turned on the team.
But I will say this – they do have a nice jumbotron…..
